As a Central Florida daycare, we come across quite a few afternoon showers. This means that our little ones need to have plenty of indoor activities ready at any time. Here are some of the rainy day activities that we do in the daycare and are easy to do at home as well, perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
30 Rainy Day Activities
- Puzzles.
- Make homemade snacks.
- Build a Lego village and just keep adding to the structure!
- Take recycled bins/tubs and create something. Don’t have a recycled art/project box? Start one. Kids both at school and home love them!
- Musical exercise.
- Draw the teacher/you.
- Make masks with sticks/tongue depressor sticks.
- Dramatic play day. Depending on what supplies you have you can play House, Acting/Movie Star, Bank, Court, Doctor/Nurse/Hospital, Animal Hospital, Office, Restaurant, School, Travel, or T.V. News/Weather.
- Pasta/rice/bean art.
- Face painting.
- Generate ideas for games to play once the rain stops.
- Practice magic tricks and put on a show.
- Build a Lego or block village. Keep adding to it.
- Have them plan a party.
- Jewelry making with yarn, beads or other supplies.
- Practice different yoga poses.
- Take old socks and make them into puppets. Then do a show!
- Try letting them do the storytelling. Going back and forth, or around the group, one person starts a story. Use an object such as a small ball; when the first person is done with his/her two or three lines, the object is passed along, until the story is complete.
- Make art from different magazines and books.
- Origami.
- Make playdough or flubber.
- Learn a new dance. (Limbo, Conga line, YMCA, Macarena, Chicken dance, the Hustle)
- Make friendship bracelets.
- Finger painting.
- Simon Says.
- Doing crafts that are in relation to the upcoming holidays.
- Play a board game.
- Go over classwork/ Lesson plans.
- Play cards.
- Take their favorite book and make
These are a few ideas for when it’s a rainy day and you find yourself stuck inside. Come up with some of your own ideas and write them in a Rainy Day Book for the next time you are caught inside all day.
